Iditarod National Historic Trail - Lower Ingram Creek Bridge Construction

Nick Georgelos

Construction of a 75-foot wooden truss bridge providing access across Ingram Creek connecting existing sections of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, located in Turnagain Pass, AK. All materials including foundation gravel, shoring materials, wooden truss bridge components, tools and equipment were all flown in and also removed using a variety of helicopters sized to meet our specific needs.

All site preparation, site layout, tree clearing, excavation and foundation construction work was completed without the use of heavy equipment, during the summer and fall of 2020.

During the summer of 2021, a temporary structure was designed and constructed to span Ingram Creek providing support and a working platform during the assembly of the wooden truss bridge. Once the wooden truss bridge was complete and spanning the creek under its own weight, the temporary structure was dismantled and prepared for flight away from the site. Backfill and associated trail work was performed by hand, utilizing native materials and capped with imported gravel for the bridge ramps.

This bridge now completes a continuous 8 mile trail loop that can be accessed via two different trailheads along the Seward Highway. This trail is great for hiking, biking, skiing and pack horse. Enjoy!
